With the 2027 general election approaching, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally selected former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate alongside Atiku Abubakar. The party says the decision followed consultations with stakeholders across the country and Amaechi’s performance in the ADC presidential primary, where he emerged runner-up.
Amaechi has held major positions across Nigeria’s legislative and executive institutions. He served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor of Rivers State for two terms, and later as Minister of Transportation. This gives him experience at both state and federal levels of government.
Coming from Rivers State, Amaechi brings a prominent South-South voice to the ADC presidential ticket. The party has described his regional reach and political relationships across Southern Nigeria as part of the considerations behind his selection.
Unlike politicians whose experience is concentrated in one arm of government, Amaechi's career has included legislative leadership and executive administration. The ADC has specifically highlighted this combination as an asset for its proposed administration.
As Minister of Transportation, Amaechi was involved in the federal government's transportation and rail-development agenda. His time in the ministry gives him direct experience with large-scale federal infrastructure programmes and public-sector administration.
Amaechi has operated across different political environments and has been involved in building political alliances at both state and national levels. The ADC says his ability to work across political and regional lines was among the factors that made him a complement to Atiku's candidacy.
Speaking at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference, Amaechi urged Nigerians to assess politicians based on their records rather than ethnicity. He also stated that voters should not support the ADC if the party fails to perform.
The ADC's formal nomination of Amaechi means the Atiku-Amaechi ticket now combines a former vice president and presidential candidate with a former governor, state assembly speaker and federal minister. The party has presented the combination as one intended to bring together experience, regional representation and national political reach.
Ultimately, whether the ticket delivers on its promises will depend on its policies, implementation and performance if elected. For voters, Amaechi's documented record in Rivers State and at the federal level provides material to examine alongside the ADC's stated plans for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 election.
