Electricity remains one of the most important drivers of modern development. It powers businesses, supports industries, improves healthcare delivery, enhances education, and creates opportunities for economic growth. Wherever stable electricity exists, productivity rises, investments increase, and communities experience a better quality of life.
This explains why Governor Umo Eno has consistently placed the power sector among the key priorities of his administration. Since assumption of office, he has repeatedly emphasized that sustainable economic growth cannot be achieved without reliable electricity; a conviction that has shaped several policy decisions under the ARISE Agenda.
Today marks another important milestone in that journey as Governor Eno inaugurates the pioneer members of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The inauguration, scheduled to take place at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Uyo, represents a strategic step in the implementation of the State Electricity Reform Programme and further demonstrates the administration's determination to build a functional and sustainable electricity market.
The inauguration of the pioneer members of the Commission, which comprises Engr. Ubong Etukudoh, Dr. Valerie Obot, Mr. Paul Okon, Dr. Kalu Ukoha, and Ms. Arit Uya, signals the commencement of a new phase in the state's effort to strengthen regulation, improve oversight, and create the institutional framework required to attract investment in the electricity sector.
The establishment of the Commission did not happen by chance. It is the product of a carefully structured reform process that has unfolded over the past few years under Governor Eno's administration.
From the beginning, the Governor identified electricity as a critical enabler of every other component of the ARISE Agenda, including industrialization, agricultural expansion, healthcare improvement, education, aviation development, and job creation.
His commitment became even more evident when he declared a state of emergency in the power sector. That decision showed that the administration was indeed prepared to move beyond rhetoric and pursue practical solutions capable of delivering lasting results.
In September 2025, the Governor convened Akwa Ibom's first-ever Electricity Summit which brought together regulators, investors, industry experts, development partners, and policymakers to examine the opportunities and challenges within the sector.
More importantly, the summit produced a roadmap designed to guide the state's transition into a viable sub-national electricity market capable of meeting the growing needs of businesses and households.
Since then, deliberate efforts have been made to translate those discussions into concrete actions. His administration has intensified plans for the completion of the Etim Ekpo Power Injection Station while also pursuing the replacement of ageing transmission infrastructure to improve electricity availability across the state.
Partnerships have equally formed a central part of the administration's strategy. Governor Eno has engaged with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company and other stakeholders to explore areas of collaboration capable of expanding generation and improving distribution. These engagements stem from the understanding that achieving stable power supply requires cooperation between government, investors, regulators, and technical experts.
Another major development in the reform process was the establishment of Ibom Electricity Holding Limited, created to manage and safeguard the state's interests in key electricity assets. This move provides an institutional framework for proper asset management while positioning the state to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the power sector.
The inauguration of the Electricity Regulatory Commission therefore represents more than a ceremonial event. It provides the regulatory architecture needed to guide investments, protect consumers, promote efficiency, and ensure that future growth within the sector occurs within a transparent and accountable framework.
The significance of this development is far beyond government institutions. Small and medium-scale enterprises stand to benefit greatly from improved electricity supply. For many entrepreneurs, electricity remains one of the biggest operational challenges, which has forced them to rely heavily on generators and alternative energy sources.
A more stable power supply will therefore reduce production costs, improve profitability, and encourage business expansion.
Rural communities are also expected to benefit from the reform programme. Governor Eno has repeatedly expressed his desire to extend electricity access to rural areas, including the connection of gazetted villages and the deployment of alternative energy solutions where necessary. Such interventions have the potential to stimulate local economies, improve living conditions, and reduce developmental disparities between urban and rural communities.
Moreover, the healthcare sector equally stands to gain. Reliable electricity remains essential for hospitals, laboratories, and health facilities that depend on uninterrupted power to provide critical services. Educational institutions, technology hubs, and manufacturing enterprises will similarly benefit from a more dependable electricity system.
Perhaps what distinguishes the Governor's approach is his insistence that electricity should not be treated as a standalone sector, but as the foundation upon which other developments rests.
That belief is captured in his often-repeated position that the ARISE Agenda cannot be fully realised without electricity. For him, power is the catalyst that unlocks opportunities across every sector of the economy.
As the pioneer members of the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission take their oath of office today, they assume responsibility at a defining moment in the state's development journey.
Their work will help shape policies, strengthen regulation, encourage investment, and contribute to the realization of a power sector capable of supporting the aspirations of millions of Akwa Ibom citizens.
Today's inauguration is therefore more than the unveiling of a new institution. It is another step in a vision to create a state where businesses can thrive, industries can grow, communities can prosper, and development is supported by reliable and sustainable electricity.
