The Edmunds Mbassey Foundation has endorsed the Federal Government’s new directive mandating drug testing for secondary school students, calling it a timely move to protect young people and strengthen learning environments.
Since 2018, the foundation has led substance abuse prevention work in Cross River State through school campaigns, workshops, seminars, and outreach materials. Its programs focus on educating students about the health, academic, and social risks of drug use, while promoting preventive action and responsible decision-making. The group also runs a radio talk show and drama series on Sparkling 92.3FM Calabar under its i-Stand Revolution platform.
Chief Executive Officer Mr. Edmunds M. Bassey said the policy will support early identification and intervention, creating safer schools for teaching and learning.
“We thank the Federal Government for this proactive step. It reinforces the message we have been carrying to students in Cross River: that drug use has real consequences, and prevention starts with awareness and support,” he stated.
The foundation said it will expand its sensitization drive across schools in the state, linking students in need to counseling and treatment and working with school authorities to sustain a drug-free culture. It also commended NDLEA, CIND, CRISA, EU, NAFDAC, the Federal Ministries of Health and Education, NBS, and other partners for their role in the development.
Highlighting the milestone, the foundation featured the policy as the front-page story in its annual magazine, Vogue & Substance, published under the i-Stand Revolution Project.
Calling for broader collaboration, the foundation urged parents, researchers, corporate organizations, and community leaders to work with schools in implementing the guidelines. It pledged to use its radio program to deepen sensitization, stressing that a united approach is key to lasting impact.
With government policy and grassroots engagement aligned, the foundation expressed optimism that more students will make informed choices and remain focused on their education.
