Akwa Ibom State is set to host a remarkable celebration of culture and history as it marks World Heritage Day 2026 on Saturday, April 18. The event, themed “Akwa Ibom Heritage Alive,” is expected to showcase the state’s rich cultural identity while elevating its position as a key hub for heritage tourism in Nigeria.
A major highlight of the event will be the keynote address to be delivered by Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, whose presence is expected to bring intellectual depth and global attention to the celebration. The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, will serve as the Special Guest of Honour, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to cultural development and tourism promotion.
The commissioner for culture and tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia described this year’s edition as a step above previous celebrations, promising an engaging and unforgettable experience. Attendees can expect a vibrant display of traditional attire, performances, and cultural exhibitions that reflect the unique heritage of Akwa Ibom.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend and be part of what promises to be a historic and enriching experience.The occasion will also witness prize presentation to winners in the Akwa Ibom Heritage quiz competition earlier publicised for students of tertiary institutions in the state.
