A young man in his late twenties go by name Ekom Nta Effiong from Iwor Etor, was caught by Akpasak Youth Security officials vandalizing a transformer in Akpasak community, Efa, Etinan local government area of Akwa Ibom state.
Ekom was caught red handed in the wee hours on the fateful day by the vigilante men, and it was gathered that he is among the vandals who had initially visited the community to cut off and steal cables from the transformer.
Confessing to the crime in a video in circulation on social media, Effiong Nta said he is not alone in the business of electrical installation theft, he mentioned one electrical worker with PHEDC Uwem Malabo and other members of the syndicate group that specializes in vandalising electrical installations in the area and its environs.
The vigilante group drilled and quizzed him before handing him over to the divisional police for further investigation and arrests. They reported that the member representing Etinan in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Uduak-Obong Ekpo-Ufot who hails from the axis, had mandated a manhunt for youths who continually vandalize public assets, hereby hindering delivery of dividends of democracy to the people and mortgaging the benefit of others for their own selfish gains.
When asked to speak on the matter, Mr Ekpo-Ufot thanked the vigilante men for not opting for jungle justice, but instead were civil in the discharge of their duties. He expressed confidence in the capacity of the Nigerian Police Force, especially the Etinan DPO EkpoUdom to fish out the criminals, to serve as a warning to other vandals in the area.
