A'Ibom: Tracking Udom Emmanuel’s Ambitious Road Projects (1)There is no gainsaying the fact that May 2023 will see Governor Udom Emmanuel exiting office with several completed road projects which now dot the landscape of Akwa Ibom State to the credit of his administration.
Proofs abound that the Governor during his tenure has embarked relentlessly on massive development of the State’s infrastructure in various sectors, including education, health, housing, as well as roads which form the focus of this report.
During a fact finding tour undertaken by the Ministry of Information and Strategy to verify the stages of the Governor’s countless projects, residents in the various parts of Akwa Ibom commented on the socio-economic impact of the roads newly constructed by the State Government in their respective domains.
In Mbo Local Government Area where the construction of 9.0km Etebi-Enwang Road with 2 bridges is ongoing, a trader, John Isanatti said “Governor Udom Emmanuel has brought peace to the community through the bridge construction,” adding that the project has played a key role in the settlement of certain communal problems. In the words of another indigene of the area who functions as Community Liaison Officer on the project site, Mr James Edet Okon, the people of the community are thankful to the Governor “for the unity he has brought to our community through these two bridges he has constructed.”
Commenting on the ongoing construction of the 19.31km Anua-Mbak-Isiet Road with 3 spurs, a metre repairer and indigene of the community, Prince Stanley Aniefiok told reporters that “the Governor has fulfilled his promise to the community, and transportation of goods and persons to Isiet market is now less tedious for every common person.” Corroborating Aniefiok’s remarks, a patent medicine seller, Patrick Akpan said “this road has been here for a long time; it was promised and failed by the past administrations. But this present administration has given us a new lease of life, hope and contentment.”
Pouring encomiums on the Governor in another location, an indigene of Uruan, Tom Ekpenyong Tom, and a hawker, Nkoyo Effiong Ibok said the construction of the 4.0km Mbiatok-Ekerita Mbiaya Uruan Road with spurs has given the people of the area a sense of belonging as a part of the State. According to Nkoyo, “for such a long time, no administration has remembered us, but this administration has done what no other administration has done for this community.”
The team also visited the 14.5km Airport-Okopedi Road in Nsit Atai and Okobo local government areas which is being dualized by the Governor Emmanuel led administration. Here, David Edem who hails from Uruan appreciated the Government for opening up the area and developing their communities through the road expansion. A businesswoman, Mrs Agnes Clement however expressed delight, and pleaded with the government to empower the community with more infrastructure.
From the foregoing, it is obvious that Governor Udom Emmanuel is ambitious about linking every part of Akwa Ibom State, and the quantum leap in the number of roads and bridges constructed by his administration has attracted impressive milestones in social development. Coupled with the governor’s nationally lauded industrialization drive in the State, these huge efforts recorded in the State’s infrastructure makes firm the Governor’s promise to bequeath a conducive environment that would continue to attract foreign investments to Akwa Ibom, and reposition the State for future economic renaissance.
