#HOWTOFIXNIGERIA: OYA MEDIA PARTNERS MACARTHUR FOUNDATION FOR CONFERENCE ON CHILD RIGHTS

A frontline Lagos and London based media outfit, OYA Media in conjunction with Mac Arthur Foundation and Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) played host to guests drawn from the media, judiciary and clergy to sensitize them on child right and protection in Nigeria.

Inspired by The Child's Right Act (CRA 2003) the law guarantees the rights of all children in Nigeria. So far 24 out of 36 states of Nigeria have adopted the CRA as a state law. This and other related issues were brought to the front burner of the discussion on Thursday, July 15, 2021 in Calabar, Cross River

The seminar had in attendance representatives from The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Cross River State, the media, the judiciary, NGOs and other agencies on social welfare in the state.

The session, which was moderated by broadcaster, Diana Mary Owan, had a Chief Magistrate, Theresa Agom, NAPTIP Head of Operations, Jacob Oba, others were Eunice Dada, Ndodeye Bassey-Obongha and Dr Bernadine Ekpenyong. The panelists who spoke at the seminar in Calabar with the topic 'CHILD RIGHTS AND PROTECTION: FROM LAW TO REALITY ' made submissions on the high rate of child marriage and increase in baby factories in Cross River State which should be checked.

In conclusion, they agreed that awareness is important in the fight against child rights, hammering on the need to encourage victims to speak out and engage stakeholders, parents, guradians, teachers and pastors in conversations about abuse.
