NEWS: New cooperative set to empower Fishermen & Water Transporters in riverine parts of Nigeria

A new cooperative society, Coastal Fishermen & Water Transporters Cooperative Society is perfecting plans to empower hundreds in the fishing and water transportation business, in riverine parts of Nigeria and other African countries.

The information was disclosed rising from the first meeting held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The meeting had in attendance the village head of the host community of first set of beneficiaries, the representative of the bureau of cooperative, and other pioneer members who are mainly into fishing and maritime business.

In his opening remark, the Chairman of Aurum Energy & Maritime Nigeria Limited, Mr Maurice Etim, who was voted as President of the cooperative highlighted the opportunities in ocean economy and how he intends to assist members of the cooperative to harness such wealth.

Speaking further he said ' people in Calabar, Oron, Ibaka, Ikot Abasi, Opobo, Onne and other coastal cities are faced by the inability to acquire this boats, which has limited their productivity. This has inspired Aurum Energy & Maritime to partner with the Asian company, Seatec to bring affordable and lasting solution to them through the cooperative '.

He announced that the first batch of boats is targeted for disbursement by the first quarter of 2020, to fishermen in Iwot Ikot, a village near Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

In his response, the village Head of Iwot Ikot, Chief Okon Edet Omo expressed great pleasure in the fact that his community will be the first beneficiary of the gesture of Mr Maurice, his company and partners, he assured adequate compliance to the terms of engagement, with him standing as a guarantor for the recipients who are his subjects.

After the interactions, an accountant and founding member, Mr Efefiong Ekott in his vote of thanks commended Mr Etim for such thoughtfulness to establish a venture that will open up new frontiers of income generation for members, he said it is a welcome development, instead of waiting for government to carry all the burden of unemployment. He assured that he will ensure adequate support to see the vision come to reality. The house thereafter adjourned further delibrations to their next monthly meeting on a date to be communicated subsequently.
